Guest Bathroom Updates

4 Feb

The first home decorating project of the year is complete. In all honesty, I painted it about three weeks ago.

If you need a reminder of the bathroom’s before, you can look here and here.

For a grand total of about $50, I think the small updates made a big difference.

Mint and Gold Bathroom

Fresh paint (Valspar Mint Chiffon), art pulled from another room, new hand towels, a vintage milk glass tray, and a new curtain rod enliven the formerly beige room.

Printed Hand Towel

Rose Shower Curtain Hooks

Green Striped Archway

6 Sep

Let me start by giving all creative credit to Katrina via Young House Love. I  fell in love with her striped kitchen pass through. A month later, I was sitting on the couch and looked over at this blank archway between our dining and living rooms.

What I saw weeks earlier came back to my mind. Almost immediately, I grabbed leftover paint from my ombre barstool project, measured and taped off 4 inch stripes and got to work. What a huge impact a little pattern and color makes! I think Greek key pattern would also be awesome.

In July Anthony and I finally hung curtains of the proper length, purchased the retro looking mint curio that saves us lots of cabinet space, and hung the collection of green plates on the wall.

Future visions for the dining room include crown molding, and a Martha Stewart inspired coffee station featuring my espresso machine the currently resides on the top shelf of the pantry, a collection of jadeite mugs I have yet to own, and a french bottle drying rack.

What are some of your sources for pattern and color inspiration? Do you have any copycat designs in your home?

I hope your Friday is going swimmingly!

Playing House: DIY Ombre Barstools

7 Jun

Like just about every nook in our house, our kitchen/dining room is undergoing a slow makeover. The dining set replacement and reupholstery did wonders, but the room was still bare and colorless.

In the market for barstools, our search was not as fruitful as we had hoped. Anthony and I wanted backs on our barstools, but liked the look and style of most backless ones more. I have been swooning over barstool benches but after seeing their hefty price tag, we both agreed if we were going to spend that much dough, we would rather have a  new couch.

While perusing Target, I pitched an off-handed idea to the husband after eyeing these snoring things:

Gusto and Grace Boring Barstool

The pitch: What if we bought three of those cheap-Os and painted each one a different shade of green? He did not even harass me for saying we can paint anything this time! His response: Let’s do it.

Green? Because my absolute favorite piece of our furniture sits in our dining room and it is (partially) green.

Gusto and Grace Alphabet Chest

The alphabet chest is amazing for kitchen organization. D is for Dishcloths, M is for measuring cups, N is for Napkins, T is for Towels. OCD much?

The same night, we loaded up three barstools in our car and within a week, this:

Turned into this:

The pot rack was a wedding present from our registry and we picked up the EAT from Target.

The ombre effect is what I was going for. If you’re going to try this at home, here’s what I learned:

1. Spray paint comes in very limited colors (Lowes, Michaels, and Wal-Mart have the widest selections).

2. Spray painting is the easiest way to achieve a smooth even coat.

I painted two with spray paint in the closest colors I could find to what I wanted (emerald and mint) and hand painted the middle one with Valspar’s Pine Green and a brush.

Now I am on the hunt for some curtains to hang on the swing arm curtain rods we got awhile ago. We also ordered new kitchen cabinet pulls to spruce up the area even more.

I see some jadeite in my future…

My Love is in the (Hot) Air (Balloon) Bridal Shower

7 Mar

Last Saturday I attended the best bridal shower I’ve ever been to: my own! My bridesmaids, with plenty of help from my mom hosted a mint, gold, and silver hot air balloon themed party. It was obvious that they put a lot of thought and work into the day.

Bridal Shower Wish Tree

They made a wish tree for guests to put advice to Anthony and I on. Here are a few words of wisdom I thought were worth sharing:

NEVER stop flirting with Anthony.”

“Don’t divorce””

“Keep your sense of humor- never be afraid to laugh at yourself!”

“…Sow mercy and lots of kisses.”

“If you ever argue- fight naked-”

Donut Hole Skewers

Mint Menu and Hot Air Balloon Garland

The menu consisted of donut hole skewers, mini monkey breads, champagne cupcakes from Stir Crazy, mini quiche, mini pancakes with smoked salmon and herbed cream cheese, and a yogurt bar.

Love is in the Air Banner

We played a game that was loosely based off of the game IMAgiNiff. One of my bridesmaids read off questions with multiple choice answers and everyone (including myself) wrote down what they thought I would choose. At the end of the game, whoever had the most answers to match mine won. The questions were entertaining. For example: If Dominique were a road sign, what would she be? “Dangerous curves ahead” was my answer, of course!

Engagement Photo Clothesline

The gold and silver clothespins are hanging a few of our engagement photos. These will always be treasures.

Bridal Shower Guests from Above

The love and generosity of my friends on that day was overwhelming. I truly felt showered with love and blessings. And all because I fell in love… It was incredible to spend time with so many women who have shaped who I am and supported me for so many years.

Cookie Cutter Favors

I love the hot air balloon cookie cutter favors as much as all the rest of the guests.
